“Trusting God When the Path Makes No Sense”

Genesis 12:1–9

There are moments in life when the path before us seems to make no sense. We pray for direction, ask God for clarity, and it feels as though heaven has gone quiet. Sometimes we sense God calling us toward a decision, a change, or a step of faith that doesn’t fit our logic, doesn’t match our timeline, and doesn’t seem to add up. If you’ve ever been there, you’re in good company, because Abraham was there first.

Genesis 12 opens with one of the most unsettling and faith‑stretching commands in Scripture. God tells Abraham to leave his country, his relatives, and his father’s household, everything familiar, stable, and secure, and go to a land God would show him. Abraham is given a command, but not a destination. A calling, but not a map. A direction, but not the details. This is one of the first truths of faith: God often begins His plan with a step that feels unreasonable.

Yet while God gives Abraham no timeline, no itinerary, and no explanation, God gives him promises. “I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you. I will make your name great. You will be a blessing. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” God’s pattern is consistent, He gives instructions, not explanations. Explanations produce understanding, but instructions produce obedience. When God speaks, He is not trying to satisfy our curiosity, He is shaping our trust.

Abraham responds with immediate obedience: “So Abram departed as the Lord had instructed.” He moves without clarity. He steps out without details. He obeys without knowing the next step. This is what faith looks like, faith moves before it knows, obeys before it understands, and steps out before it sees the outcome. Abraham’s obedience teaches us that clarity comes after movement, not before. God reveals the next step after we take the first one.

But how do we get to this kind of faith? Abraham shows us: we must let go of what feels secure. God wasn’t just moving Abraham geographically, He was moving him spiritually. Abraham had to release his cultural identity, his relational identity, and his economic identity. He had to surrender comfort, familiarity, and control. Faith is not believing God will explain Himself; faith is believing God will lead us Himself.

As Abraham walks, God confirms His promise, not before Abraham leaves, but after he arrives. Revelation follows obedience. Clarity follows movement. Confirmation follows surrender. Abraham sees the land only after he walks into it. And the same is true for us. We see God’s plan as we walk, not before we walk.

When the path makes no sense, when the details aren’t clear, when God’s instructions stretch us beyond what feels comfortable, the call is still the same: trust and obey. The blessing is on the other side of obedience. The clarity is on the other side of surrender. The promise is on the other side of the step we are willing to take. If we trust God enough to move when He speaks, obey Him even when we don’t understand, and follow Him even when the path is unclear, we will find that God is already waiting for us in the place He’s calling us to.

Peace and blessings,

Pastor Eddie

Weekly Prayer

Lord, when Your path feels unclear and Your instructions stretch me beyond what is comfortable, give me the courage to trust You. Teach me to move when You speak, to obey even when I don’t understand, and to follow You even when the details are missing. Lead me into the place You have prepared and strengthen my faith as I walk with You. Amen.
